Welcome to the Sacred Economy
Upcycled Textiles. Empowered Women. Sustainable Impact. Built for People, Planet & Purpose.
Founded over a decade ago under the Meaningful Change Institute, the Sari for Change Foundation (SFCF) is a social entrepreneurship initiative advancing the just transition of marginalised women through upcycled textiles.
We create sustainable earning pathways by equipping unemployed women with skills in garment-making, production, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy. By transforming heritage textiles into contemporary garments, we cultivate circular economies rooted in dignity, cultural memory, and long-term resilience.
Upcycled Textiles. Empowered Women. Sustainable Impact.
Built for People, Planet & Purpose.
Operating at the intersection of ethical fashion, circular economies, and women’s empowerment, SFCF contributes directly to Africa’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 1, 3, 4, 5, 8, 10, 11 and 12).
Women Impact
At the heart of the Sacred Economy are women.
The Foundation provides structured training, mentorship, and practical production experience, enabling women to generate income and establish home-based businesses. Many participants now earn above the South African minimum wage - creating stability not only for themselves, but for their families.
To date, the Sari for Change Foundation has:
- Trained over 120 women
- Indirectly impacted more than 300 family members
- Built pathways toward entrepreneurship through cooperative hub development
Our Pay-It-Forward model ensures that trained women become trainers, multiplying impact and strengthening community-led growth.
Water. Carbon. Waste. Reclaimed.
Building circular economies rooted in heritage, sustainability, and shared prosperity.
Environmental Impact
Our work directly diverts textile waste from landfill and reduces carbon emissions through local, low-impact production.
To date, we have:
- Collected over 25,000 saris
- Repurposed more than 8,000 into new garments
We operate through zero-waste design principles, upcycled materials, natural detergents, and responsible resource management. Environmental tracking systems for energy, water, waste, and chemical use are in development to strengthen accountability and traceability.
We are not simply reducing waste - we are redesigning production to prioritise people and planet together.
Give your pre-loved saris and heritage textiles new life.
Donated textiles are transformed into contemporary garments through our training hubs - reducing waste while creating economic opportunity.
